Hunt gets the nod

Thursday finally rolled around. The first official day of my project began without much of a hitch, except for the fact that the game cleats I was supposed to have didn’t turn up while I was unpacking. With just a few hours before equipment checkouts, I thought I had plenty of time to make a quick trip to the mall and pick up a pair of black Reeboks.
Only problem was they were all out. According to the shoe salesman at Hibbett Sports, I wasn’t the only Maryville College player who forgot to buy a pair. Full story »

Webb big test for Bulldogs

T.J. Kimble has really been on the move this season. The Maryville Middle School eighth-grader has accounted for eight Bulldogs touchdown — four rushing, four receiving — through three games. The Bulldog flyer also starts at free safety and is reputed to be a big hitter. Maryville (2-1) will need a big game from Kimble and the rest of the Bulldogs to slow a talented Webb School of Knoxville team in the Blount Today Middle School Game of the Week tonight at Maryville High’s Shield Stadium at 7 p.m. Full story »

Findley shines in MC debut

Kristin Findley had some first week. The Maryville College freshman collected 43 kills to go with 29 digs and 14 services aces in four matches in being named to the Cougar Class All-Tournament Team last weekend at Averett University in Danville, Va. The 6-foot outside hitter also seven blocks in her collegiate debut, leading the Lady Scots to a runner-up finish in the tournament. Full story »

Riddick’s “Stars of Tomorrow” basketball camp making positive impact

Lorene Riddick last played college basketball years ago, but his passion for the game draws him back to the court each year. While he’s not playing professionally or on the collegiate level, he’s still striving to make an impact on those youngsters playing the game. For more than 10 years now his Stars of Tomorrow camp gives young players the chance to learn the basics of the game and pick up valuable lessons in life.

Between Maryville’s George Quarles and Alcoa’s Gary Rankin, Friday’s Rebels/Tornadoes clash at Shields Stadium will feature two of the best offensive minds in high school football anywhere.
Between the two of them, they’re responsible for nine state championships at their respective schools, with Quarles collecting an astonishing seven the last eight seasons at Maryville, Rankin two in his first two seasons at Alcoa. The veteran coach claimed four titles at the helm of Class 5A midstate power Riverdale before taking the Alcoa job. Full story »

Lesson in sportsmanship

Every now and then, often when you least expect it, you get a classic.
The Fairview Raiders led the Eagleton Knights by a touchdown with less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening quarter of the Parks & Rec Grasshopper Football Jamboree last Saturday at Alcoa High School.
The Raiders had thrown a Knights’ ball carrier for a loss on the previous play. Eagleton was out of timeouts. Full story »
