Blount County student awarded TVA Power Distributor Scholarship

Gene Walker of Heritage High School has been awarded a $4,000 college scholarship from TVA and the City of Alcoa Electric Department through the TVA Power Distributor Scholarship Program.
One of 32 scholarship winners chosen from 137 applicants, Gene has a 4.0 grade point average and is the son of Roger Walker who is an employee of Alcoa Electric Department. Full story »

National Merit Scholarship semifinalists from Maryville High School named

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently released the list of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists across the nation. On the list of Semifinalists in the 54th annual National Merit Scholarship program were three Maryville High School Seniors. Full story »

Let the games begin

The financial goal wasn’t as much as the Bulldogs wanted, but the participation made up for it. When the Bulldog Game Day fundraiser was held recently at Maryville Middle School, almost every student present -- about 800 -- participated. While the event didn’t raise the amount of money organizers wanted, they raised more than they ever had in the past.
Technology specialist Kevin Myers said the fun had by everyone overshadowed the fundraising goal. Full story »

Maryville High School Drama II play production class will present “Romeo, You Idiot,” a comedy by Tim Kochenderfer.
The synopsis is that nothing could come between Romeo and Juliet. “Not the most bitter mafia rivalries, nor the itchiest poison ivy, nor even the wooings of an alleged vampire could tear them apart. Yes, the love of Romeo and Juliet could survive anything. Well, except for poison.” Full story »

Homecoming at Alcoa

Alcoa High School followed a grand tradition for high school memory makers when they held their annual homecoming during the Alcoa and Sweetwater game. The Tornadoes gave the students much to be proud of as they shut out Sweetwater 51-0.
Crowned King and Queen were Michael Haynes and Laurel Pace.

A group of high school students will take to the streets of Blount County Halloween night. They don’t want candy. They want cans.



The eleventh annual Trick or Cans promotion will take place Friday, Oct. 31. The event, which was started at Maryville High School, now involves students from all four high schools.

There’s a whole lot of everything going on in Blount schools. While the majority of the “going-ons” involve learning, there are plenty of other things to do to keep students, teachers and the community involved.
Over the past month, Blount Today received many invitations to visit area schools for some of their activities. We took lots of pictures, and, while we can’t share them all, the next three pages are the fruits of some of our labors.
You’ll see dances and chickens, Career days and groundbreakings. There were teachers who didn’t mind showing off their “Hannah Montana” inner-selves and others who picked up some honors of their own. Full story »

Turning over dirt

Officials from the City of Maryville and the Maryville City School Board as well as other members of the community broke ground on a new intermediate school on Sept. 26. Dignitaries broke ground for the new facility planned just off Sevierville Road on the former DeLozier farm property situated near Burchfield Street. The project is one of several on the drawing board as the city and the school system continue to grow. Full story »
