It’s now 62 straight for Maryville High School’s football team.

The state’s longest winning streak just keeps growing and growing and growing …

After last week’s 20-13 victory over arch-rival Alcoa, it’s back to Region 3-4A play for the four-time defending 4A champion Rebels.

Clinton (0-1) comes calling on the Rebels (2-0) at Shields Stadium Friday night. Across town, Heritage (1-0) returns to action after an off week and hosts Region 2-5A heavyweight Farragut (2-0) at Jack Renfro Stadium. William Blount’s Governors (0-2) will try to break an early-season slide when Soddy-Daisy’s Trojans (1-0) come to Mike White Field.

Alcoa’s four-time defending 2A champion Tornadoes (1-1) are the only Blount County team traveling Friday, on the road at White House.

All kickoffs are 7:30 p.m.

Maryville churned out better than 200 yards rushing last week, with senior Thomas Shuler punctuating the effort with a 100-yard night on the ground to go with a second-quarter touchdown. Junior quarterback Philip Juhlin looked especially good running the option for the Rebels. Receiver Chris Jordan has been steady for Maryville, but look out. The Rebel senior has yet to really torch an opponent. He’s due.

The Mountaineers, coming off a big, season-opening win over Seymour in Week 0, have perhaps the night’s biggest matchup. The Admirals have run roughshod over their first two opponents — a 38-7 beating of West and 45-21 win over Knox Central.

Mountaineer senior quarterback Chase Boruff had a big week in the opener, going 8-for-9 for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Seymour. Heritage will need another one just like it if it’s to pull the shocker.

The Governors were in the thick of the region chase all season last year. If they’re to rejoin the race in 2008, getting by a resurgent Trojan team that knocked off Red Bank, 33-22, last week is big. Linebacker Cole Lail and defensive end Tim Hassett pace a tough William Blount defense. An offense hard hit by injury will also have to find a way if the Governors are to right their ship.

The Tornadoes had two cracks at it late last week at Maryville. Running back Jaron Toney and fullback Taharin Tyson showed well in the loss. Quarterback Chase James, who had a first-half, 17-yard scoring run, had a strong night.

Two late first-half turnovers, both leading to Zach Sharp field goals, were costly for Alcoa. A Tornado team looking to get well could very well prove a chore for White House.
