Maryville Rugby recognized by county commission
At the Aug. 21 Blount County Commission meeting The Maryville Rugby Football Club was recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in the past five years, especially for the ladies’ winning record in the 2007-2008 year. During the year MRFC ladies had a record, 24-1 season, were the 2008 Smoky Mountain Regional Champions, the Tennessee high school champions, USA Rugby South champions and placed fifth in the nation. Maryville RFC ladies and coaches received a proclamation from the board honoring the team and encouraging all of Blount County to join in applauding their services.
United U-10 Girls win Asheville Soccer Shoot Out
The Blount United 10-under Lady Hammers Gold, based in Maryville, won the Asheville Soccer Shoot Out recently, giving up only a single goal. The Lady Hammers road to the championship started with an 11-0 victory over the East Tennessee Soccer Federation, followed by two 6-0 wins against the Lake Norman Soccer Club, the No. 1-ranked u-10 team in North Carolina, and the Holston Valley Football Club. The championship was clinched with a 4-1 victory over LNSC Lady Tornadoes. Abigail Anderson, Savannah Bradburn, Allison Hendrix, Madison Huffstetler, Preston Robinette, Jori Rogers, Emery Spears and Evey Satterfield all scored goals for the Lady Hammers.
Blount United U-17 Boys win Liberty Cup
The Blount United 17-under boys, based in Maryville, won the Liberty Division of the Vestavia Liberty Cup in Homewood, Ala., 16-17 August. The Hammers opened play on Saturday with a 2-1 win over the 92 Vestavia Steamers. Later that day, the Hammers overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the Freedom, 5-2. On Sunday morning, the Hammers wrapped up the division win with a 5-0 result against the 92 River Region Rapids. The Hammers are coached by Keith Robinson and managed by Judy Harp. The team is playing in the 2008 TSSA Division I State League.
